There’s no better way to hold onto that footloose and fancy free summer vibe just a little bit longer than by hosting a party! Today I’m sharing photos of the late summer soirée that I helped my friend pull together to celebrate her husband’s birthday.
The party was a classic clambake, but the raw elements – tried and true picnic tables, kitschy plates and cheerful sunflowers – would work equally as well for a classic fall BBQ or for an Oktoberfest celebration complete with a craft beer bar, sausages and strudel!
This was a relatively impromptu celebration, planned and hosted in just over two weeks. We chose uncomplicated elements such as paper placemats to highlight the simple wooden tables…
Mason jars for water glasses, and preppy blue and white striped napkins tied up with rope for a nautical feel.
The melamine “How to Eat a Lobster” plates added a touch of whimsy, as did the place cards…which were secured with clothespins and included a note on the back wishing the birthday boy a happy birthday. The birthday boy, of course, had his own personalized message.
I found these charming blue and white ceramic vases on the “Sale” table at one of my favorite garden centers
and we filled them with sunflowers — which are abundant and reasonably priced this time of year.
The finished product:
We used burlap wrapped votive holders to layer in another interesting texture (here they double as a caddy for appetizer forks)…
and scattered a few marine elements around to keep the decor light and playful.
These giant lobster claws starred in many a late night photograph!
(Lobster drink stirrers on the bar.)
A vessel for the host’s signature cocktail…
Prepping the appetizer table:

The picnic tables:
And cupcakes, treats and candy for dessert!
I loved that this party was so spontaneous and that many of the elements – the mason jars, the blue and white vases and the burlap votives – can easily be reused for future celebrations. The lobster placemats are from Carrot and Stick but Hester and Cook also has a great selection of paper mats and table runners. Meanwhile, these fun napkins from Harvey & Strait could be just the ticket for your next “boil.”
Ditto this adorable pillow. Quite the catch!
Although it’s sad to wave goodbye to summer entertaining, I am so excited for the change in seasons: The promise of crisp and sunny afternoons, colorful mums, perfectly round pumpkins, apple picking, tailgates and cozy autumn suppers. Bring it on! Happy “Back to Everything!”
